Inspirational stories...

Sharon an inspiration...

Sharon was born in Tasmania and spent her teenage years there before moving to Sydney to pursue a career in the airline industry.
Sharon Southern and I both worked for Ansett Australia in two different departments and would pass each other on daily basis, we even had mutual work friends, but did not know each other.
Ansett collapsed in 2001 Sharon went onto work for Qantas.

Sharon was a very health conscious person she had been swimming for over 20 years and did regular work outs in the gym and very particular about her presentation.

At the age of 38 Sharon was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called LEMS Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome. LEMS is a rare disorder of neuromuscular transmission, LEMS usually comes out alone but Lung Cancer may accompany the disease in some cases. It is caused by the antibodies that are directed against the antigens of the neuromuscular junction.

Approximately 50% of LEMS cases have an identifiable malignancy, the disease usually observed in middle aged to older people but children and younger people can be affected.

Sharon did not feel her usual active self and her symptoms included severe dry eyes and profound general weakness, predominantly in her legs. A swift diagnosis and an experimental drug developed for this rare condition restored some of her strength, but this had to be taken four hourly and varied in its effectiveness.

Then a year later Sharon was diagnosed with every womans worse nightmare, breast cancer.

Sharon had no choice but to have a mastectomy but was told the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes. She now takes a drug called Tamoxifen to suppress estrogen and has been advised to take this for five years from her diagnosis. After two and a half years, she remains cancer free.

I met this truly amazing woman just after I took over the
studio, 2 months after her surgery. Since then we have
maintained a regular training routine consisting of
resistance training along with swimming sessions.

Due to Sharons condition she now does voluntary work for the Oncology Childrens Foundation and when not there Sharon is writing speeches (her own business My Speech) for that special day or addressing your next company meeting.
