FLUID / Hydration v's Dehydration

How much water should we drink? Water is an essential daily requirement for us to function efficiently. More than 60% of a male’s and 50% of a female's body is made up of water. An average adult will lose 2-2.5 litres of water per day. Water forms the basis of blood, digestive juices, urine and perspiration and is contained in lean muscle, fat and bones.

It regulates our body temperature, lubricates and cushions joints and carries nutrients and oxygen to cells. Dehydration occurs when the water content of our body is too low. Symptoms that may occur include headaches, mood changes, weakness, dry or cracked lips and discoloured urine. This can occur when the body becomes over heated due to humidity, hot weather and exercise. Having diarrhoea, vomiting or fever may also be a cause and not drinking enough water. It is recommend the average adult should consume at 2-3 litres of water per day depending on the day’s activities. Tips for hydration keep a glass of at your desk, a bottle in your gym bag and a glass by your bed, for the athlete sports drinks are recommended.
