Protein is one of the three main nutrients found in food. The body requires protein to make skin, hair and muscle cells and protein has an important role in the immune function. Animal foods contain the full range of amino acids, while plant sources of protein contain some but not all of the amino acids. For this reason, plant sources of protein need to be eaten in combination for the body to get the right mix of protein.
